Patrick James

Patrick James

‘He’s not going to wear a kaftan, nor is he going to use auto-tune. He’s just a boy with a guitar writing beautiful, simple and powerful songs. And to be honest, that’s all you really need.’

Patrick James has been winning the hearts and minds of the Australian folk scene with his no nonsense, straight up style of excellence. Playing intimate gigs with like minded, equally talented people Patrick has been a busy guy of late. I caught him performing a few months back playing at the Hibernian House in Sydney where the night was shared with Faith Lee & Tim Hart and the boy was on fire. Simple folk music at it’s finest with well crafted guitar work and lyrics.

More recently Patrick has taken the tour with Tim Hart further a field. Playing similarly intimate venues, this tour stretches from The Waiting Room in Brisbane down to Beav’s bar in Geelong. The pair will be stopping in Sydney to celebrate the half way mark with a show at the Kings Cross Hotel as part of the FBi Social and Patrick James will be calling into the studio to share some music live on air that morning.

Tune into Bondi FM 3rd March from 9am to catch Patrick James on The Saturday Walk of Shame. We’ll be talking about life on the road, his new EP and even share in a couple of tracks. It’s going to be the perfect start to your Bondi Weekend.

Pear and the Awkward Orchestra

Pear and the Awkward Orchestra

Pear and the Awkward Orchestra recently released a fabulous lil’ clip for their latest single, Castle.  Reflective of their unique music style the clip is as quirky and cuddly combination of stop motion goodness that’s full of the brightness of life.

Fresh from a solo jaunt in Canada and the States Pear has returned to Brisbane to create a brand new Awkward Orchestra to share life on the road with.  Solid song writing, melodic whimsy and a folksicle root music await the audibly adventurous at one of their live gigs.

Last year’s critically acclaimed ‘Smocks!’ has earned the group a solid live status and much praise in press land. Triple J, Triple R and 2SER all singing the praise of this unique voice.

They’re in town this week playing as part of the FBi Social. If you’ve not yet been to any of their events now is the time to get yourself firmly involved. Pear and the Awkward Orchestra will be playing in the following spaces:

…See you there!

Wake Owl

Wake! Owl – Wild Country EP

Lead by vocalist Colyn Cameron, Wake! Owl, are a folk outfit from Vancouver!  The team of troubadours got together over to pour their  musical know-how into creating the 5 songs collectively known as the Wild Country EP. The songs evoke a disparate landscape that would be well suited to the snow capped hinterlands of Canada. Yet the tracks bear the glow of a great log fire to produce an EP that is both warm and inviting, bursting full of promise.

Fans of Boy & Bear, or Bright Eyes will no doubt enjoy Wake! Owl. They’ve drawn comparisons from the likes of Tallest Man on Earth and Mumford and Sons, though I believe that’s more to do with the soaring violin and raspy vocals rather than bluegrass banjo’s.

Below is a sneaky taster of what the Wild Country EP is made of (which I found over at Fresh Muse) and you can find out much more info through the Wake! Owl FB page. Their music is available for a donation via their Bandcamp page and I can assure you, any dollars you put forward will go a long way to ensuring the longevity of this project, so get involved!

Pepper with mentor Dizzee Rascal

Pepper with mentor Dizzee Rascal

I’m not saying this girl will be massive this year, it’s too easy. I’m not going to say that just because she featured as a finalist in some UK pop talent contest, nor because she could have easily followed the path laid out by Kate Nash or even Adele, that she’ll be on all over your stereos. Nope sir, not me. I don’t have to say it because Pepper has been signed up by Dizzee Rascal and he’s saying loud enough for everyone. Yup, freshly signed up to Dirtee Stank records this dub step – pop cross over sensation is causing a storm. Riding the waves of the dubstep tsunami taking the mother land by storm. Kudos to her too, clearly she can sing, and with Dizzee by her side I think the two will be a formidable duo.

Yes, some might argue that Katie Pepper’s warm, polished vocals and deliberate attempt to push dubstep into the pop mainstream could well be the very end of true dubstep as the hard core would have it. Yes, people have been saying that about Dizee Rascal for a while and yes, it’s true, when you ask me about Pepper this time next year maybe I’ll stare back at you blankly as I search for the memory. But hey… Living for the magical, musical, moment of the hear and the now, the lyrics that play over the Dizzee beats provide more than the ordinary. This extraordinary new music offering is coming your way! Check out the full version below of head to her website to see a stripped back acoustic version of her brand new single, Wish it Away:
